- The first aphorism states, "No gains without pains." This aphorism matches the resolution virtue. The resolution virtue states, "Resolve to perform what you ought, perform without fail what you resolve." The aphorism means if you do not try your best to accomplish your goals you will never reach them. Trying and succeeding will get you anywhere in life, but you have to work hard to get there because no one is going to do the work for you.
- The second aphorism states, "Well done is better than well said." This aphorism matches the silence virtue. This aphorism means that it is easy to say something but to actually do it; it's really complicated and hard to do. Actually doing something well is better than just verbally saying what you are going to do.
- The third aphorism states, "The rotten apple spoils his companions." This aphorism matches the tranquility virtue; be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable. Even though you have friends who do not choose the right path it does not mean that you have to follow whatever they do. If you do not pay attention to their actions, if you do not follow their lead then you will not necessarily be affected by their actions.
- The fourth aphorism states, "God helps them that help themselves." This aphorism means that God will help those who are willing to take actions and help themselves by solving their own problems and reaching a compromise with others if their is a conflict. People who do not want to try to work to reach a solution will not be helped if they only sit their and wait for the help to come out of thin air. This aphorism matches the industry virtue, "Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions." If you are trying to progress in life and you stay focus by working hard to excel than you will be a successful persona and God will help you; but if you are not working hard and not doing anything to try to be a successful person than God will not help you resolve your problems.
